The New Canon Pixma MP 230 printer now on sale in many outlets uses the older style Canon PG-510/512 CL-511/513 ink cartridges.  This move has caused confusion with some ink sellers who have and are still offering the latest PG-540 and CL-541 cartridges by mistake.  

It is unclear why this new model uses an older style ink cartridge.  The reason could be that Canon had a remaining amount of parts that needed to be used up?  This would make sense; as why dispose of perfectly usable parts when they can be used as part of a new production process.

Google Search Engine Algorithm Update - Website Traffic Visitors Results Down

We have noticed a sharpe drop in website visitors since Google actioned their late September search engine update.  We are hoping that the situation settles down and our printer cartridges websites becomes more visible again.
Fortunately we have many existing customers who continue to visit our website, however it is always necessary to continue to add and replace those who may not return again.  The latest Google algorithm change has halved the traffic to our main website.
We have been told by our SEO friends not to panic and to hold tight for the situation to resolve itself.  It can be worrying however when half of the existing traffic is diverted elsewhere overnight.  For younger more unstable companies this must be a concerning time for them.  When much of their hard work seems to have been wasted.
Reading various blogs and pages regarding these issues one finds different reasons for changes in site traffic.  One of them is the use of descriptive domain names; in our case printer cartridges.  Several people have written that Google are penalising these domains in search results.  However talking to search engine experts this theory bears little fruit.  Some websites with descriptive domain names are still featuring high up on natural searches.
More to the point, the general consensus of opinion seems to be that Google is now more interested in active content.  Websites that change their online content often should be ranked higher.  Of course modifying content takes time which gives an immediate advantage to larger organisations with greater resources.  Companies who can afford to employ a permanent person assigned to these duties will benefit the most, meaning larger organisations will prosper with  these latest changes.
All of the above said, the jury is still out with regards to the new inner workings and mechanics of Google search.  We will all have to wait for the dust to settle; but hopefully the situation will before clearer soon before too many sales are lost!

What is the best printer for cheap cheapest ink cartridges?

The question I am always being asked is, "What is the best printer to buy for using cheap printer cartridges?".  The answer to this important question can be complex and can depend on the users requirements.  For instance if a customer wanted to use the printer in a small office then I would recommend a Brother all-in-one machine.  The replacement Brother cartridges are cheap and do not contain microchips, so no nasty error messages.  Buying a Brother printer is usually slightly more expensive than say a similar specification Epson, however the build quality seems to be better and they seem less prone to blocked print heads; at least in the first year of operation.  On the negative side, if a user was looking to print photographs, particularly on slightly thicker paper, then I would sway towards a Canon printer instead.  Brother printers feed the paper from a bottom tray which means the media has to bend around so that it comes back out of the front.  The resistance of the paper or card can slow down the movement causing either a jam or a vertical misalignment.
Canon printers often have a rear paper feed and a bottom paper feed meaning that you can use thicker photo paper within too many problems.  The rear paper feed sends the paper in more of a straight direction which means less resistance.  Canon printers also tend to have print heads with a higher dpi (dots per inch).  For example the Canon Pixma ip4950 photo printer has a maximum print resolution of 9600 x 2400dpi, making it possible to achieve impressive photographic results.  However the dots per inch is not the only factor in a printers ability to produce fine prints.  The type of ink (dye or pigment) that it uses and the included driver and utility software can make a significant difference.  Canon include an Easy Print Utility with this model that improves colour rendition as opposed to printing directly from Windows.  The Pixma ip 4950 uses five ink cartridges, a Large Black PG-525BK (Pigment) which is used for text printing, and four other Dye based inks that produce images.  While a set of original OEM cartridges costs around £50, compatible PG-525BK/526 BK/C/M/Y cartridges cost around £15 per set.  The ink capacity compared to the equivalent Brother ones is less and they are £5 more expensive.
So in this brief conclusion if you are looking for an economical small office printer then I would recommend a Brother ink jet.  If you require a cheap to run photo printer, then certain Canon models are more appropriate.  But be careful which model you choose!  We will talk more about this in future blogs.

HP Officejet Pro 8600 950/951 Cartridge Protection Option for Compatibles

When using a compatible Hewlett Packard 950 or HP 951 remanufactured cartridge you may get an error that will prevent you from using it in your machine.  You may need to cancel the cartridge protection feature.
To cancel the cartridge protection feature go to the toolbox where there is a tab named HP Cartridge Protection.  Click on this and then select disable.  The default setting is enable.

You will need to switch off the ink level monitor to allow you to use the refilled cartridge.  In the HP Officejet Pro 8600 go to the printer control panel, click on the right arrow followed by setup.  Select preferences and the cartridge chip information.  For the Officejet Pro 8100 on the control panel press and hold the Wireless and Resume buttons.  The ink supply indicators will blink 4 times.  Then press and hold the Wireless and Resume buttons again which will turn the usage monitor back on.

To reset the ink level (another problem), you will need two extra cartridges plus the one that has been refilled.  Install each cartridge in turn and print an alignment page.  Finally put the new refilled cartridge into the printer and hopefully the ink level will be restored to full.  Another method is to remove the battery from within the side panel of the printer, then replace it a minute or so later.

New Printer Ink with Lubricant aims to stop blocked printer head nozzle

Lubrink is a new type of printer ink that helps prevent inkjet printer head nozzles from getting blocked (non clogging).  Containing a secret and special formula, the new variation of ink combats this well known problem that effects many printer makes and models from Brother, Canon, and Epson amongst others; particularly those models that contain a fixed or semi permanent print head.

Just like petrol that contains a special lubricant to enhance the performance of cars, this new ink is designed to pass through the inkjet nozzles more easily, lowering the chances of a particle blockage.  In terms of printer nozzles, the gaps where the different colour inks pass are measured in microns, so keeping a clean system is critical to the long term health of a printer.  The secret ingredients in Lubrink not only lubricate, but also clean as they travel through the channels of the printer and onto the paper! 

The manufacturers of Lubrink are keen to stress that this new product will not guarantee against printer ink blockages and using the special ink should be seen as a precautionary measure.  Using this formulation of ink should reduce the likely hood of a blockage in the future and save many printers from early landfill.

A common question when switching to a different type of ink is whether it will cause a change in colour rendition?  In almost all cases colours will appear slightly different from the OEM ink and very slight adjustments may be made if necessary.  However most printer users will not bother changing the printer driver settings to adjust the R/G/B and C/M/Y mix.  The professionals will no doubt create profiles for each model of printer and paper media.

Priced at only a few Pounds more than ordinary compatible cheap Dye refill bulk ink, Lubrink should be a worthwhile investment. Currently only available in 100ml bottles for Brother, Canon, and Epson printers, but will soon also be sold in 1 Litre bottles (early 2013).  Demand is expected to be high from users who are keen to save their printers from early obsolescence.  Supplies may be limited in the early stages of production.

HP 363 Ink Expiration Expiry Date Override to Continue Printing

Some HP cartridges have an ink expiration date added to the chip which eventually stops them from working.  The Hewlett Packard HP 363 cartridges have this information incorporated into the software.  Fortunately this is one of the models that let you over-ride the message and allow you to continue printing.

HP reasoning behind adding such technology to prevent indefinite use of certain ink cartridges use is that 'Air ingestion and water evaporation can cause ink to change over time. In printing systems where the printhead and ink supply are separate, older ink can adversely impact the printhead and the ink delivery components within the printer.'  However as these cartridges come in sealed units and if they are opened for the first time after the expiry date has been reached, then this explanation is floored.  Ink quality if stored in the correct conditions can be sustained for many years, well beyond any expiry date.

The warranty period for most HP cartridges and printheads is 24 months from the date of manufacture and HP ensure that the stock leaves their warehouse at least 12 months before the end date.  The date is usually stamped on the bottom or back of the box.  HP list 4 years as the maximum lifetime for most cartridges and 2.5 years if inside the printer.  Ink expiration is not warranty expiration, so this is why HP allow an override on most cartridge models.

HP state on their website that it is indeed possible to override the ink expiry message and continue to print, however they do not give any instructions as to how to achieve this.  Seemingly this would be hard to list as each printer model may require a slightly different solution.  Instead HP advise to follow the instructions on the printer, user manual, and computer screen monitor.  There should be a way to confirm to the printer that you wish to continue to print.  In practice however it appears that some owners have removed the cmos battery which is often located on the left side of the printer.  You will need to remove a plastic cover to expose the main board and see this.  Make sure that the machine is unplugged at the wall and leave the battery out for a few minutes so that the memory resets.  For most people though this is a bridge too far to travel.  Only the DIYer type of person will attempt this type of reset fix.

Inkjet and Laserjet printers have got cheaper in recent years.  This means that many models are sent straight to landfill instead of being offered a repair.  However there are some models that are worth repairing, may be because they use cheap cartridges or offer good quality print.

The most common fault with an inkjet printer can be blocked print head nozzles, preventing one or more colours from transferring onto the page.  Fortunately in many cases these problems can be resolved by using special cleaning cartridges.  We sell these print head cleaning cartridges for Brother, Canon, HP, Epson printers at our website with free UK delivery.

Some printers have to be reset, particularly Epson models after they have printed a certain number of pages, or when the waste ink pad is full.  We have the software to reset most models but there are some newer ones that cannot yet be done, so please contact us before travelling to our Louth store.

If your printer is still under warranty and you know the error message then we recommend you contact the manufacturer customer support help line and tell them the error message.  The printer may need to be returned to them for maintenance and repair.  Some error messages can indicate that there is paper or that a foreign object is jammed in the mechanism.  These faults can often be fixed by yourself by looking under the cover with a light.  Be careful when pulling trapped paper out the wrong way as this can damage the paper feed motor.

The most common fix for a simple printer error can be to switch it off and unplug it at the wall to reset the memory.  Sadly on many occasions this is not sufficient to resolve the problem.  In these cases the software or hardware fault needs to be diagnosed and corrected.  A good idea is to make a note of the error code and then search for this in Google.  You will probably see several forum pages listing existing users with similar problems.  These wesbites can be extremely useful in deciding your next course of action, however some pages will prove to be a waste of time as they will just show details of the error code, but offer no information as to how to fix the problem.  I hate these type of time wasting pages!

As new computer operating systems are introduced, ie. Windows 7 and soon to arrive Windows 8,  a new printer driver is required so that you can continue to use an older printer.  Fortunately these can usually be downloaded from the manufacturers by searching for the model number in a search box on their website.  You are best to download the software direct from them as oppose to third party sites that may contain a virus.

Epson Expression Home XP-102 Hits The Shops Today

The new compact Epson Expression Home XP-102 all-in-one printer becomes available to buy from today priced around £50 and aimed at the home and student market.
Previously the word 'Expression' was used by Epson for it's scanner range, but we will soon see a list of printer models bearing this tag, followed by letters XP.
The XP-102 features a healthy print resolution of 5760 x 1440 dpi, however the scanner is only 1200 x 600 dots per inch.  There is no Wireless / WiFi and no support for mobile devices.  There are no memory card ports so you will need a PC or Mac to operate this printer.

New Brother DCP J140W Wireless Printer Offers Competition to Epson

Brother have just released their latest multi-function model, the DCP-J140W printer; the cheapest Brother printer yet offering Wireless connectivity!

Sharp Practices involving terms and conditions and small print

In this modern age we are often presented with lengthy terms and conditions that we first have to agree with so that we can proceed with a transaction or contract.
As most of us do not have instant access to a lawyer, or the time to sit and study a complicated set of terms and conditions, we invariably just click on agree!  Unfortunately by agreeing to whatever the document says can wave our rights to a fair deal!
Fortunately most companies will not use this opportunity to exploit their newly found customers.  Sadly though some will include various clauses that remove valuable rights in the future should you be dis-satisfied with the service.  For example, you will be clearly made aware of the length of the term you are signing up for (ie. 12 months), but contained in the small print may also include extra charges.  There may also be minimum cancellation periods.
A good example of this can be found with our franking machine supplier.  When the Royal Mail postal prices change in April each year, the franking machine company will charge you a significant amount of money to update their machine with the new rates.  This charge is not made clear to you unless you read the small print; I call it a hidden charge! In addition every time you add credit to the machine you pay an administration charge, and the machine has to dial up atleast once a month; otherwise it will stop working. These added charges and inconvenience detract from the benefit of the service.
I prefer to deal with honest companies who do not use what I call 'sharp practices' to make their margin.  Only deal with a company who provides clear charges and simple billing that you can understand!

Printer Ink Cartridge Not Recognised Error Canon Reset

Many Inkjet printers use microchip technology to determine which type of printer cartridge has been installed in which particular ink slot in the printer carriage.  This is particularly important so to ensure that the correct colour cartridge has been installed in the correct slot; thus preventing cross contamination of colours in the print head.
Sadly this technology can cause new problems such as 'cartridge not recognised' error messages!
Some say that chips on cartridges were introduced by printer manufacturers for other profit related reasons; to halt the use of compatible cartridges and to prevent original cartridges from being refilled.  Whatever the reason, the use of such technology is causing headaches for printer users World-wide.  Confidence in refilling and buying compatible cartridges has been damaged in some cases as a result.
Fortunately due to Internet search engines we are able to find solutions to these frustrating problems.  Common fixes require a combination of button presses on the printer itself.  Doing this can disable the ink monitor and enable the user to continue to print even though ink monitor levels read as empty.  A classic example of this can be found with the Canon PG-37 PG-40 PG-510 PG-512 PG-540 black cartridges that contain a built-in print head, and similarly the colour CL-38 CL41 CL-51 CL-511 CL513 cartridges. Once the cartridge has been used once and becomes almost empty the ink monitor also reads empty and cannot be reset to read full again.  However it is possible to disable the ink monitor by pressing certain buttons in order on the printer.  For example for the Canon Pixma MP460 you need to first disconnect the power cable then hold down power button. Reconnect the power cable while still holding down the power button.  At the same time press the Cancel / Stop button twice; then release the power button.  This will set the printer to factory mode.  You will need to wait for around half a minute until 'idle' message is displayed.  Then press the down arrow button until it says 'shipping mode 1'.  Then press the 'OK' button.  The display will now say 'without cleaning' and you need to press the power button.  A test page should now print.  You then need to open the cover and disconnect the power again.  Remove the black and colour cartridges and close the cover again.  Plug in the power cable, press the power button and then replace the two cartridges.
For many Canon models such as the MX300 you can usually just hold down the stop / reset button for 10 seconds to disable the ink monitor.   Procedures can vary depending on the machine model and solutions can be found on Google search or You Tube.
If the cartridge cannot be reset and errors persist then there is a chance that the copper contacts on the print head circuit board have been damaged.  There are pins that can become worn and short against each other, causing errors and preventing further printing.  A close inspection may be necessary to determine if this is causing the problem.

HP OfficeJet 150 1st portable multi-function printer

Exciting news that Hewlett Packard will soon be selling the HP OfficeJet 150 Mobile All-in-One portable printer.   Weighing in at just 3 kilograms and measuring 350mm x 171mm x 90mm, the fairly expensive printer (US$399) is aimed at sales representatives who need a mobile printing and scanning facility. 
The Officejet 150 all-in-one machine features a lithium-ion battery, allowing users to print up to 500 pages on a single charge.
Unlike other portable printers currently on the market today, the HP Officejet 150 will use standard cartridges.  Printing costs per page should be between $0.12 per (colour), and $0.05 for black; with print speeds of between 3.5 to 5 pages per minute.
Printing, scanning, and copying functions will be controlled by the 2.36 inch colour touchscreen. In addition the device can print from Windows Mobile, and Blackberry mobile devices via a Bluetooth 2.0 wireless connection. However software providing the ability to print from Apple iPad and iPhone is not yet included. We find this surprising considering that most new HP printers now have the capability of printing from Apple mobile devices?
Included in the specification is a 50 pages sheet feeder, and a print resolutions of 600x600 black, and 4800x1200dpi colour.  There is a USB 2.0 and PictBridge port, not to mention an SD card slot.  A carry case will soon be made available for approximately $80.

Print Head Cleaning Instructions - Help with unblocking blocked printer nozzles

Inkjet Print Head Nozzles are well known for becoming blocked with dried ink or air, particularly Brother, Canon, Epson, and Kodak.  Fortunately these blockages can usually be cleared by running the standard head cleaning routine on the printer software.  Unfortunately this does not always work and it is necessary to perform manual maintenance to recover a correct ink flow.
There are two methods of unblocking the print head.  The first is to attach a syringe to the stalk leading to the print head.  We do not recommend this as it can damage the print head beyond repair. 
The best and safest way of clearing a blocked print head is to use dedicated cleaning cartridges which contain a specially formulated solution to dissolve blockages without damaging the heads.  Such cartridges can be purchased from the following store...  https://premium-inks.com/collections/printer-head-cleaning-cartridges

Some printers will allow you to just replace one colour, so if there is no black ink finding its way on to the paper, insert the black cleaning cartridge into the machine and print several full size pages of the image to the left.  Doing this will guarantee that a fair quantity of cleaning solution will be pushed through the print head nozzles.  Finally, replace the normal black cartridge and print as normal.  You may have to print a few pages before the black ink begins to appear again.
If the nozzle remains blocked after performing the above operation, then repeat the exercise, but this time leave the cleaning cartridge inside the printer overnight.  This will allow the solution to eat away at the blockage.
Cleaning cartridges are usually 75% successful, unfortunately however there is no guarantee that they will clear the blockage. 

Cartridges that contain microchips may not like to mix with the special cleaning cartridges chips, so you will have to install the whole set.  This makes using the following colour print images more important as you do not want to pass too much fluid through the heads that are not blocked.  If the cyan, magenta, yellow, light cyan, or photo cyan colour(s) are blocked, then print one or more of the surrounding images. Right click on them and select save image.  Then print full A4 size pictures of them.  As the cleaning fluid takes over from the ordinary coloured ink you will notice the colour gradually fade away.

Following frequent requests from our Louth shop customers we have been sourcing some high quality picture frames and mounts for A4, A3 and A3+ printed images.  During the last few weeks we have been looking at samples of wood and composite wood finish frames that are glazed; some containing cardboard mounts of various colours.
Our favourite so far is the plastic wood effect frames with cream or white mounts inside.  To our surprise the artificial frames seem to feature a more pleasing grain and colour.  For this reason we will be stocking these to begin with alongside a variety of optional mounts in various colours sized to fit inside of them.

Do you save money using a Franking Machine for Post?

With postage prices due to increase very soon, the potential savings of using a franking machine postage service become more attractive.
Over the last few years we have leased a franking machine from one of the main service providers in the United Kingdom because potential savings of between twenty percent could not be ignored.  Unfortunately we found the system to be unworkable due to it causing extra paperwork and lost time.
One of the main problems we found was topping up the machine with credit!  It should be a simple procedure where you transfer money from your bank account to the service provider.  Initially we were given a one thousand pounds credit limit which only lasted a couple of weeks (Reduced to five hundred pounds duting the last credit crunch!).  When this was exhausted, to keep using the service we were required to pay back the thousand pounds plus add credit to our account.  We would transfer the money via a BACS transfer or cheque (Debit card payments were not accepted).  After the transfer had been actioned we had to call customer services so that they could locate the payment.  On more than one occasion our payment could not be found by the first operator, resulting in a second or third call until we spoke to a competent person.  The credit would then be added to our account.  We then would move on to the next step which was dialling up the data centre on our franking machine to download the credit.
Once the machine is topped up with credit it can be plain sailing.  Every time you print a label and stick it on a parcel you are saving money.  Significant savings are made on small packets and parcels.
Come the end of the month you receive several invoices containing charges for machine rental, top up charges etc.   The billing is very confusing and impossible to understand.  In fact even employees of the service provider company struggle to make sense of them!  In my opinion it is confusing by design so that they can make more money by added charges and possible mistakes!  You just give up in the end trying to understand what is going on!
It is important to negotiate with the service provided in the beginning to get a lower monthly rental and service charge because their are more charges that do not become apparent in the beginning without reading the small print.  One of these charges is for updating the postal rates on your machine which can cost fifty pounds (If you complain you may get a 50% discount).  Another is the monthly connection required to update the machine software.  Ink cartridges for the franking printer can cost forty pounds when purchased direct from the service provider, and if you are a frequent user of the service you will need a new one every four to eight weeks.
These added running costs really start to eat away at your margin of saving and taking into consideration the amount of time wasted topping up your account and machine; not to mention the complicated billing, any savings made are just not worth the hassle!  The extra administration required removes your focus from your main function in the business, adding unnecessary stress to a modern day work place.
These days we buy ordinary stamps from the post office.  When we apply them to the parcels we must remind ourselves of how much administration time and hassel we are avoiding, and not focus on the actual higher cost of the stamps.

Epson Stylus Office B1100 A3+ Printer with Premium Inks Compatible Ink

New HP Printer Manufacturing facility will produce 40 Million Inkjet and Laserjet printers each Year

HP have agreed to build a new manufacturing facility in Chongqing, China to produce Inkjet and Laserjet printers.  The factory located in South West China will take three years to complete and will also eventually manufacture 150 Million Inkjet cartridges each year.
Chongqing is fast becoming the Information Technology hub in China with Acer and Asus already having bases there.  HP already own a desktop and notebook manufacturing plant in the area.

Update: We ordered two similar sets of cartridges from two different manufacturers for the above printers.  One of the sets was found to be completely successful, however the second set would not reset the ink counter after one cycle.  We will be ordering a limited supply of the working version which will be available very soon from our website.
Successful Set Test Report: 
These cartridges were filled with ink using 10ml capacity syringes.  Because these large reusable cartridges hold more than 80ml of ink; a larger filling device is recommended.  There are bigger syringes available which hold more ink and will save time and potential mess.
The cartridges were inserted into the new Epson printer and were recognised immediately with perfect results.  We left the printer performing a long print run and we are pleased to say that results were consistent with no fading or banding.
Note:  Do not leave the small colour plugs in the air filter chamber as this will stop ink from flowing!

HP Lightweight Paper will suffer from Inkjet Bleed-through on heavier printing.

HP are to introduce (Spring 2012 - North America / Late 2012 - Europe) a new lightweight everyday A4 paper rated at just 60 grams per square metre.  There aim is to reduce the environmental impact of their current product by 22 percent.  A lesser amount of raw material and energy will be required to produce the product, and transportation and storage costs will be reduced.
We think that this is a good idea for certain applications such as invoices and packing slips, however we feel the product may be unsuitable for general purpose printing.  If too much ink is applied to thin paper the colour can bleed or seep through to the other side; known as bleed-through. It is therefore important to use the correct paper for the type of ink coverage required to eliminate bleed-through issues.
We have found that even 80 gram thick paper is susceptible to such problems, and customers of our Louth computer shop usually opt for 90 or 100 gram thick A4 paper reams which produce better quality double sided results.  However the common mainstream 80 gram standard paper will continue to dominate the market place as the vast majority of our customers only print on one side of the sheet.
Larger organisations may find a place for this new product, which will enable them to lower their carbon footprint.  It is doubtful however that 60 gram paper will become common-place for home and small business printer users.  The current 80 gm standard works satisfactory with most inkjet and laserjet printers on the market today.

Epson Stylus Photo R1400 Printer and Premium Ink Compatible Cartridges Produces Impressive Results

At our Louth office we unpacked a new Epson Stylus Photo R1400 yesterday.  Instead of using genuine Epson inks I installed Premium Inks Compatible Ink Cartridges to replace (T0791 Black, T0792 Cyan, T0793 Magenta, T0794 Yellow, T0795 Light Cyan, T0796 Light Magenta).

Set up was very easy for this machine.  I just plugged in the USB cable from my laptop to the R1400 printer after installing software from the provided CD.  It took a while for the CD to install, but after a re-boot we were up and running very quickly.

The supplied Epson software includes an Easy Photo Print Utility.  With this you simply have to browse for the image you are printing, then select the paper size and type.  To begin with I used the automatic factory settings and printed some classic Van Gogh paintings on A4 Jetplay matte inkjet paper 190 g/m2 paper.  The first print was of the Café Terrace at Night, painted in mid-September 1888.  The first thing to catch my attention were the oil brush strokes that seemed almost to add an extra dimension, standing proud of the paper!  Important to also note the dynamic range of colours produced by the Epson R1400 in conjunction with the Premium Inks cartridges.

Today (07/05/12) I experimented with A3 size Sumvision 260 gram glossy photographic paper.  I decided to select a powerful image of a Peacock featuring vivid iridescent blue-green colours.  Again the results were impressive, however I think they would have looked better on a high quality matt paper; and although the resolution of the source picture was high, on closer inspection the clarity and definition of the image are not 100%.

In the afternoon I purchased a Wilkinson 20" x 16" plastic wood effect glazed picture/photo frame incorporating a cream mount.  The opening was almost too wide (on the shortest sides) to comfortably seat the A3 print, however with some careful maneuvering this was achieved.  There was an inch of play on the length meaning we lost a couple of centimetres of the image behind the mount.

A nice gentleman came into the shop today looking to purchase a R1400 printer after seeing the unopened box in the window last week.   I informed him that we only had one unit left and this had been used for demonstration purposes over the last couple of days.  After seeing the prints it had performed, he wanted to purchase it.  So I no longer have an R1400 printer to play with which I am a little sad about.

I have just ordered a cheaper Epson B1100 A3+ printer that I will put to the test later this week.

Refillable Printer Cartridge Troubleshooting Guide (Ink Flow Problems / ARC Chip Not Recognised)

There are several checks that you need to perform if you are experiencing performance issues with refillable cartridges.  Here are some of the most common problems and solutions.

Problem: No ink is coming out of the cartridge.
1. Make sure that you only have one rubber stopper / bung inserted in the cartridge.  Do not block the air filter hole as this will stop ink from leaving the cartridge.
2. Inside many refillable cartridges is a spring, that when pushed up opens a valve.  This is usually located at the bottom where the ink should come out when entering the printer nozzles. If you insert a syringe (without needle) and push it up, this will open the value and you will be able to suck a small amount of ink into the syringe.  This will create a siphoning motion and hopefully sustain a proper flow of ink.  You then remove the syringe while maintaining pressure, not allowing any ink to go back into the cartridge. Replace the cartridge and run a head cleaning cycle or two.
3. If after performing the above troubleshooting techniques ink is still not transferring on to the paper, then you may have a blocked nozzle or print head.  You may need to use cleaning fluid to clear blockages.  We recommend you purchase special head cleaning cartridges.  We stock these for various printer makes and models including for Brother, Canon, Epson, and HP at.. https://www.printercartridges.net/printercartridgesstore/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=222  You could also use the refillable cartridges you already have by filling them with cleaning solution.  Please refer to our cleaning cartridges instructions for more details.
4. If you cannot clear the blockage then you will need to buy a new printhead (for certain Canon and HP printers), but this could prove more expensive than buying a new printer! You will need to decide whether you like the printer enough to keep it and that it offers superior quality and cheaper runing costs to newer models.  For Epson and Brothers printers that contain a fixed printhead you may be forced to replace the printer!  This is very common practice in these modern times of recycling!

Problem: One or more of the cartridges are not recognised by the printer. (Replace Cartridge Error / Cartridge needs replacing / Wrong black or colour installed etc.)
1. For models that contain a smart-chip it is necessary to have the correct version installed.  Make sure that you have the correct cartridges for your printer.  Please see our full range at.. https://www.printercartridges.net/printercartridgesstore/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=116
2. If one cartridge is not recognised then try removing it and carefully wiping the chip.  Then re-install and try again.
3.  For Canon and Epson models, try taking out all of the refill cartridges and unplug the printer at the wall socket.  After one hour has passed plug it back in and re-install all of the refillable cartridges to see if this has solved the problem.
4.  For Brother printers unplug the printer at the wall for one hour before trying again.  This should reset the memory.  Brother cartridges do not contain a chip so cartridge information is estimated by the machine.
5. Some printers do not like a mixture of special refillable cartridges with ARC auto reset chips and ordinary OEM or compatible microchips.  You will need to install the complete set of reusable ink tanks for them to be acknowledged.
6. The latest type of reusable cartridges for use with Epson printers (Stylus Color S22 SX125 SX130 SX225W SX235W SX245W SX420W SX425W SX525 SX525W etc.) features a small battery.  If the cartridge does not reset automatically you may need to perform a manual reset.  This can be performed by touching the two copper pins on the chip at the same time with a metal piece.  If your version does not contain these pins then you will need to remove the battery to reset it.

Does the use of replacement compatible ink cartridges invalidate your printer warranty?

EU law with regards to recycling means that using compatible, refilled/recycled cartridges no longer invalidates your printer warranty.
In a 2007 Directive {2002/96/EC] on waste electrical and electronic equipment,  the act of circumventing EU recycling rules was outlawed, blocking manufacturers who design products with features such as chips that block recycling.  It was noted that such anti-reuse tactics that block future recycling have an environmental impact.
This EU ruling means that it is illegal for printer manufacturers to void your warranty purely due to the use of compatible cartridges.

Chip removal / reinstallation of chip and reset procedure for Canon Pixma PGI 520 CLI 521 PGI 525 CLI 526 cartridges

When using compatible Canon Pixma PGI 520 CLI 521 PGI 525 CLI 526 cartridges that do not contain a micro-chip you will need to transfer the existing chip from the OEM cartridge and stick it to the compatible one.
On the genuine cartridge the chip is usually held in place with double sided sticky tape .  You can carefully  lever this off using a sharp tool and use the same tape to stick it to the new cartridge.  Be careful not to damage the chip when you do this!

New Windows 8 and Printer driver software availability problems.

Consumer preview versions of Microsoft Windows 8 are now available.  We can all get a glimse of what to expect in the latest version of the operating system giant.  Most of our interested will be focused on it's level of integration with existing devices, in particular printers.
Upgrading to the latest version may prompt consumers to also upgrade their printer hardware, and because it could be several months before new driver software becomes available for all models; when it does, what type of compatibility problems will be encountered? Hardware may be rendered unusable until solutions are found?  'No compatible driver for my printer under Windows 8' errors could be common-place.
Fortunately Microsoft have re-designed the printer driver model 'version 4 v4' so that when Windows 8 detects a new device the Microsoft auto search feature automatically searches for the best driver and downloads it from the Windows Metadata Information Store (WMIS).  There is also a manual search option to be found under Control Panel > Devices and Printers for you to select 'Advanced Printer Setup' which allows you to find a local or network printer manually .  Unfortunately even if you do find the correct printer driver you may suffer from operational problems.  Jobs may be frozen in a print queue for example and require a system re-boot.  These sort of problems are to be expected as this is only a Beta version of the operating system.  The full commercial version is not due to be released until September / October 2012.
With the vastly increased ownership of tablet and mobile smartphones, wireless connectivity is becoming a real must, and no longer a bonus feature.  Windows 8 offers far greater integration with mobile, touchscreen devices, and metro style apps via v3 and v4 printer driver model, and printer manufacturers are using these new features and benefits to promote and sell their products.  Important factors that are prompting consumers to upgrade their printer hardware this year!
I must be getting too old and stuck in my ways to welcome or accept change because I am still using Windows XP!  I have resisted the temptation to adopt Vista or Windows 7 on my own PC's and Laptop.  XP works, and works well on a daily basis.  I cannot see the point in upgrading to a differenent environment; a different planet almost.   However if I were twenty years younger no doubt I would exhibit increased enthusiasm that would influence an upgrade ot two; and then maybe encounter simillar problems to that of braver computer users.
