Our customer still had the original cartridges and she put the black one into the machine first and it was of course recognised by the WF4025.  Then she put the compatible refillable ones back in after touching the two round copper pins on the chips (which may have also had a bearing on the result?).  The refillable cartridges were then recognised and the printer is now fully operational again.

If possible it may be a good idea to disable automatic Epson printer updates to prevent future problems?

Yesterday we received our first consignment of refillable cartridges for Epson Workforce WF-2010W WF-2510WF WF-2520NF WF-2530WF WF-2540WF printers.  These empty cartridges feature an auto reset microchip which allows the cartridges to be re-used.  They have a colour bung stopper plug at the top which you remove to refill them with ink.  This inlet also acts as the air filter so the colour stoppers are NOT replaced, otherwise no ink will flow from them.
